Sinus Lifts

Sinus Augmentation & Lifts in Aventura, FL
Unlocking the Potential for Implants

For many patients, the journey to dental implants hits a roadblock when they are told, "You don't have enough bone." This is particularly common in the upper jaw, where the maxillary sinus (the air pocket behind your cheeks) sits very close to the roots of your teeth.

At BOND Aesthetic, a lack of bone is not a disqualifier; it is simply a variable we manage. A sinus lift is a predictable, precision procedure designed to create the necessary real estate for a long-lasting implant. It transforms the anatomy of your upper jaw to ensure your new smile has a solid foundation.

Creating Vertical Space

The maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities located just above your upper back teeth. When you lose these teeth, two things happen: the jawbone begins to resorb (shrink), and the sinus floor naturally expands downward. This leaves a paper-thin layer of bone that is insufficient to anchor a dental implant.

A sinus lift is essentially a bone grafting procedure. We gently lift the sinus membrane upward—restoring it to its original position—and fill the newly created space with bone grafting material. This material eventually hardens into dense, living bone capable of supporting an implant.

Who Requires Augmentation?

This procedure is strictly for patients needing implants in the upper posterior (back) jaw. It is the necessary pathway if:

  • Long-Term Tooth Loss: You have been missing upper molars or premolars for years, causing the bone to atrophy.

  • Anatomy: You have naturally large sinuses or a naturally thin jawbone.

  • Periodontal Disease: Previous gum disease has eroded the bone height in the upper jaw.

  • Failed Implants: Replacing a previous implant that failed due to a lack of bone support.

The Surgical Protocol

We utilize advanced ultrasonic technology to ensure this delicate procedure is performed with maximum safety and minimal trauma.

  1. 3D Visualization: We take a CBCT scan to measure the exact height of your bone and the shape of your sinus. We know exactly how much lift is required before we begin.

  2. Access: We make a small, precise incision in the gum tissue to access the lateral jawbone.

  3. The Lift: Using specialized instruments (often Piezosurgery, which uses sound waves instead of drills), we gently elevate the sinus membrane without damaging it.

  4. The Graft: We pack the space beneath the membrane with high-quality bone grafting material.

  5. Healing: The site is sutured closed. Over the next 4 to 9 months, your body turns that graft into solid bone, ready for an implant.

Why BOND Aesthetic?

We prioritize techniques that reduce inflammation and speed up healing.

  • Piezosurgery Technology: We often use ultrasonic vibration tools that cut hard tissue (bone) but selectively preserve soft tissue (the sinus membrane), significantly reducing the risk of complications.

  • Biocompatible Materials: We use only the highest grade of sterile bone grafting materials—whether synthetic, bovine, or donor—ensuring safety and integration.

  • Combined Treatments: In some cases where there is partial bone remaining, we can place the implant at the same time as the lift, saving you months of treatment time.

  • Sedation Dentistry: We ensure you are completely relaxed or asleep during the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does a sinus lift affect my breathing or sinuses?
Generally, no. The procedure takes place at the floor of the sinus. It does not interfere with the nasal passages or your ability to breathe. However, if you have a chronic sinus infection, we may require clearance from an ENT specialist first.

  • Where does the bone come from?
We typically use processed bone minerals (from a bottle) that act as a scaffold. Your body's own cells migrate into this material and turn it into your own bone over time. We rarely need to take bone from another part of your body.

  • What is the recovery like?
Swelling and minor bruising are common for a few days. The most important rule during recovery is to avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully, as this can disturb the healing membrane.

  • Is it painful?
During the procedure, you will feel nothing. Post-op discomfort is usually managed easily with over-the-counter pain relievers and a prescription antibiotic to prevent infection.
