Inlays and Onlays

Quality Porcelain Inlays & Onlays in Aventura, FL

The Perfect "Middle Ground"

In the past, if a tooth had a cavity too large for a filling, the only option was often to shave it down for a full crown. At BOND Aesthetic, we believe in a more conservative approach. We operate under the philosophy of Biomimetic Dentistry—mimicking the properties of natural teeth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible.

What Are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorative fillings that are custom-made in a lab to fix decay or damage too extensive for a standard filling but not severe enough for a full crown. They allow us to strengthen a compromised tooth without aggressively removing the healthy enamel that remains. It is the ideal solution for the space between a simple repair and a major reconstruction.

The Mechanics of Partial Coverage

These restorations are often referred to as "partial crowns." Unlike a filling, which is molded directly in your mouth, these are custom-fabricated solid pieces of ceramic that are bonded into place like a puzzle piece.

  • Inlays: These fit securely inside the "cusps" (the bumps) of your tooth. They are used when the damage is contained within the center chewing surface.

  • Onlays: These are more extensive and cover one or more cusps of the tooth. They are used when the structure is too weak to support biting force but the tooth does not yet require a full crown.

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For Inlays & Onlays?

This treatment is designed for patients who need durability but want to avoid the invasiveness of a crown. It is the recommended pathway if you are addressing:

  • Moderate Decay: Cavities that are too large for a composite filling but haven't destroyed the whole tooth.

  • Failing Metal Fillings: Replacing old, large silver (amalgam) fillings that have caused the surrounding tooth to crack or turn grey.

  • Fractured Cusps: Repairing a specific part of the tooth that has broken off due to trauma or biting pressure.

  • Weakened Enamel: Reinforcing a tooth that is at risk of splitting if not structurally supported.

Our Process

Because these restorations are custom-milled, they offer a superior fit and seal compared to traditional fillings.

  1. Preparation: We gently remove the decay or old filling. Unlike crown prep, we leave your healthy enamel untouched, only smoothing the internal shape.

  2. Digital Scanning: We use advanced intraoral scanners to capture a 3D image of the cavity preparation.

  3. Fabrication: A master lab technician or our in-house milling unit crafts the restoration from high-strength porcelain or resin, ensuring it matches your tooth shade perfectly.

  4. The Bond: The inlay or onlay is chemically bonded to your tooth. This bonding process actually strengthens the remaining tooth structure, effectively tying the tooth back together.

Why BOND Aesthetic?

We choose the harder path because it is better for your long-term health.

  • Maximum Conservation: We save up to 75% more tooth structure compared to a traditional crown.

  • Invisible Margins: Our ceramics are translucent and blend seamlessly with your natural tooth—no distinct lines or metal edges.

  • Structural Integrity: We use bonding protocols that reinforce the tooth from the inside out, reducing the likelihood of root canals later in life.

  • Biocompatibility: Our materials are metal-free and gentle on the surrounding gum tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why not just get a regular filling?
Regular fillings (composite) shrink slightly when they harden. In a large cavity, this shrinkage can pull on the tooth walls and cause cracks or leakage. Porcelain inlays/onlays do not shrink, offering a tighter, longer-lasting seal.

  • Is it as strong as a crown?
Yes. Modern lithium disilicate (porcelain) used in onlays is incredibly strong and can withstand full chewing forces, often matching the durability of a crown without the aggressive drilling.

  • How long do they last?
Because they are custom-made and bonded securely, inlays and onlays often last significantly longer than large fillings—typically 15 to 20 years or more with good care.

  • Does the process hurt?
The procedure is very similar to getting a filling or a crown. You will be under local anesthesia and will not feel pain during the preparation or bonding.
